QUIMERAS. LA BIENAL DEL 74 COMO LABORATORIO SOCIAL DEL PRESENTE
PATRICK HAMILTO Y EUGENIO TIBALDI

Curator
Eugenio Viola

30 April, 2025 – 7 September, 2025
MAC Quinta Normal
Opening: 29 April, 7pm

This project arose from a dialogue between the Italian artist Eugenio Tibaldi and the Chilean Patrick Hamilton, and was conceived on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the Venice Biennale in 1974. It was the first time that the Biennale took a deliberate political stance, from an experimental and laboratory approach. That event marked a milestone in the history of one of the world’s most influential art institutions, becoming the most imposing cultural manifestation against the Pinochet dictatorship, an event that, with time, has faded from the collective memory.

Quimeras is a two-voice project that questions the legacy of that event today and its evocative capacity. It invites us to reflect on how the messages of the past can be reinterpreted and applied to today’s challenges, reopening an active debate in art on issues that are still relevant today. Can art be an effective bulwark of democratic resistance? Is a political approach to art still relevant in our globalised era?

This project is funded by the Instituto Italiano de Cultura Santiago and the Fondo Nacional de Desarrollo Cultural y las Artes CONVOCATORIA 2025, with the support of the Italian Embassy in Chile and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
