In the framework of the 10th edition of BIENALSUR 25, Macaparana will be presenting “Critique of Pure Abstraction”, a group show curated by Florencia Battiti and Fernando Farina, on view on July 8 until October 11 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, at the Cultural Space in the Brazilian Embassy, Palacio Pereda.
About the exhibition:
In modernity, the experiences of abstract art sought to break with the concept of the ‘window box’ through which to represent the world. By limiting its repertoire to the use of strictly plastic elements – line, point, colour, plane, texture – abstraction sought to eliminate reference to reality, thus renouncing figurative representation and the subordination of the work to a ‘theme’. In its desire for absolute autonomy, modern abstraction strove for the union of art and life, and in its path it sowed a wealth of experiences and research from which contemporary artists draw.
Today, the canon of abstract art is revisited and redefined by artists who, far from the purism and antagonisms between poetics characteristic of modernity, move in the waters of an aesthetic pluralism that introduces vital problems and questions of our contemporaneity into the language of abstraction.
