Biography
Diet Sayler was born in 1939 in Timișoara, Romania. From 1956 to 1961, Diet Sayler studied Structural Engineering at the Technical University of Timișoara. Concurrently, he studied Painting under Julius Podlipny.
In the early 1960s, Sayler embraced abstract painting, which would later be unjustly criticized as Western and decadent, resulting in its exclusion from all art exhibitions.
However, in 1968, during the Prague Spring, a pivotal moment arrived when the “5 Young Artists” exhibition, featuring works by Bertalan, Cotosman, Flondor, Molnar, and Sayler, introduced abstract-constructive art to Romania at Galeria Kalinderu in Bucharest. This breakthrough prompted Sayler to relocate to Bucharest, allowing him to exhibit internationally despite not being allowed to leave the country.
Upon emigration to Germany in 1973, Sayler shifted the focal point of his life and work to Nürnberg. Starting in 1976, he took on the role of a lecturer in addition to pursuing his artistic endeavours.
In 1975, he showed his works at the Grand Palais in Paris, marking his debut in the city’s art scene. Subsequent solo exhibitions were held in Munich, Milan, and Madrid. His artwork found a stage not only across various Western European nations, but also in Brazil, Japan, and the United States.
With the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1990, retrospectives on Diet Sayler’s work were shown in Eastern Europe, including exhibitions at the Czech Museum in Prague, Vasarely Museum in Budapest, and the National Museum in Bucharest.
Of noteworthy mention is the “Konkret” exhibition series in Nürnberg, directed by Sayler from 1980 to 1990, which garnered international acclaim. This series featured participation from approximately 100 artists, including luminaries such as Dan Flavin, Ellsworth Kelly, Kenneth Martin, Vera Molnár, François Morellet, Aurélie Nemours, Mario Nigro, Leon Polk Smith, and Jesús Rafael Soto.
Diet Sayler’s early influences included Brâncuși and Malevich, with a strong focus on Suprematism and Russian Revolution art. He also delved into the theories of De Stijl and Bauhaus. Later, he embraced the principle of chance of Dadaism, which shaped his creations. Sayler transitioned to concrete art as a rejection of political realities and socialist realism, emphasizing the theme of change in his work.
Initially known for vibrant colors, his art shifted to black and white during a period of rejection and opposition. After emigration, he concentrated on delicate lines on white canvases. In the late 1980s, Sayler developed a foundational system of basic elements, becoming a hallmark of his painting, and eventually returning color to his work.
