Casado Santapau se complace en presentar la tercera exposición individual del artista griego Antonis Donef (1978. Vive y trabaja en Atenas).
El trabajo de Donef es un desafío al consumo tradicional de la palabra escrita, una resignificación al uso de los medios de comunicación impresos, despojándolos de su función primaria para elevarlo a un plano puramente artístico. Su proceso implica la caza y recolecta de objetos raros y peculiares, explorando librerías de segunda mano y anticuarios en busca de almanques, manuscritos o eniclopedias como la griega Helios o la alemana Brockhaus Enzyklopädie. Tras una cuidadosa selección, arranca las páginas amarillentas por el paso del tiempo y las reorganiza según sus propias reglas, pegándolas sobre tela de lienzo, que ya en esta primera capa adquieren una impronta pictórica y compositiva precisa.
Los collages complejos y las capas superpuestas que realiza el artista también incluyen recortes de mapas vintage, que colecciona durante sus viajes, tanto en Grecia como en el extranjero. Este proceso largo y orgánico de cortar y pegar las tiras de mapas sobre el lienzo busca recomponer el conocimiento, creando nuevos mapas a partir de la deconstrucción y el reensamblaje de extractos geográficos. Este trabajo refuerza la idea de la creación de universos paralelos, de información concentrada y de una cartografía reinterpretada.
Lejos de enfrentarse a un lienzo en blanco, Donef parte de una superficie saturada de significados, y en ella establece un diálogo entre impulso e información. Su enfoque conjuga lo enciclopédico con lo infantil, el conocimiento sistematizado con la intuición lúdica. De hecho, su aproximación recuerda esa actitud atrevida del niño que, en su afán de dibujar, no duda en intervenir una imagen ya hecha, dotando al gesto de una espontaneidad cargada de sentido. La palabra impresa, convertida en imagen, se emancipa de su función didáctica para transformarse en un juego visual y poético.
En sus obras, los detalles emergen del caos ordenado de las paginas de libros antiguos, diccionarios, enciclopedias o mapas, y como si de una escritura automática se tratase, revela elementos de recuerdos personales, interpretaciones tanto conscientes como inconscientes, proyectadas a través de la complejidad de los dibujos y pinturas sobre la superficie.
Con una pluma tradicional y tinta, empieza a realzar tímidamente las imágenes de las páginas. A medida que avanza, se va volviendo más audaz, creando ilustraciones complejas, cuya iconografía laberíntica y estilo caligráfico otorgan un dinamismo excepcional a su trabajo. Los collages y dibujos del artista conforman verdaderos palimpsestos visuales, en los cuales las capas de texto, imágenes y tinta se funden dando forma a un nuevo territorio, donde los fragmentos del conocimiento se combinan, se contradicen y se enriquecen. Esta fragmentación no responde al capricho, sino a una poética del caos organizado, que recuerda la reflexión de Roland Barthes en su ensayo Las láminas de la enciclopedia, donde apunta que, una vez disuelta la naturaleza original, emerge otra, idéntica en forma pero distinta en significado.
En conjunto, el trabajo de Antonis Donef se caracteriza por su densidad conceptual y su meticulosa elaboración. Cada capa, trazo y fragmento de texto o mapa contribuye a la construcción de un mundo visual y conceptual que solo se desvela en su totalidad cuando se experimenta de forma paciente y reflexiva, convirtiendo al espectador en lector activo de un texto visual en permanente reescritura.

Casado Santapau is pleased to present the third solo exhibition of Greek artist Antonis Donef (1978. Lives and works in Athens).
Donef’s work challenges the traditional consumption of the written word, re-signifying the use of printed media by stripping it of its primary function and elevating it to a purely artistic plane. His process involves the hunting and gathering of rare and peculiar objects, exploring second-hand bookstores and antique shops in search of almanacs, manuscripts, or encyclopedias such as the Greek Helios or the German Brockhaus Enzyklopädie. After a careful selection, he tears out the yellowed pages aged by time and rearranges them according to his own rules, pasting them onto canvas. Even in this initial layer, they acquire a precise pictorial and compositional imprint.
The artist’s complex collages and overlapping layers also include cutouts from vintage maps he collects during his travels, both in Greece and abroad. This long and organic process of cutting and pasting map strips onto the canvas seeks to recompose knowledge, creating new maps through the deconstruction and reassembly of geographic excerpts. This work reinforces the idea of the creation of parallel universes, concentrated information, and a reinterpreted cartography.
Far from confronting a blank canvas, Donef begins with a surface already saturated with meaning, establishing a dialogue between impulse and information. His approach merges the encyclopedic with the childlike, systematized knowledge with playful intuition. In fact, his method echoes the daring attitude of a child who, eager to draw, has no hesitation in intervening in a pre-existing image, imbuing the gesture with a spontaneous, meaningful energy. The printed word, transformed into image, is emancipated from its didactic function to become a visual and poetic game.
In his works, details emerge from the ordered chaos of pages taken from old books, dictionaries, encyclopedias, or maps. As if engaging in automatic writing, he reveals elements of personal memories, both conscious and unconscious interpretations, projected through the complexity of his drawings and paintings on the surface.
With a traditional pen and ink, he begins to timidly highlight the images on the pages. As he progresses, he becomes bolder, creating complex illustrations whose labyrinthine iconography and calligraphic style lend his work exceptional dynamism. His collages and drawings become true visual palimpsests, in which layers of text, image, and ink blend together to form a new territory, where fragments of knowledge combine, contradict, and enrich each other. This fragmentation is not arbitrary, but rather responds to a poetics of organized chaos, reminiscent of Roland Barthes’ reflection in his essay The Plates of the Encyclopedia, where he suggests that once the original nature is dissolved, another emerges—identical in form, but different in meaning.
Overall, Antonis Donef’s work is characterized by its conceptual density and meticulous execution. Each layer, stroke, and fragment of text or map contributes to the construction of a visual and conceptual world that only fully reveals itself when experienced patiently and reflectively, turning the viewer into an active reader of a visual text in constant rewriting.
